311. Ruza was doing so well until panel 4.
312. This whole sequence was a weird gamble and a real challenge! This comic obviously slips into subjective reality/surrealism every now and then, but the style is realist and detailed enough that it’s easy for things to look goofy or dumb instead of compelling and dreamlike.
314. The acoustics in that place must be pretty cool, and the fact that Ariana doesn’t seem to have done this before is probably some kind of testament to her level of repression.Â
315. Luther is probably saying pfennig instead of penny, but the line isn’t important enough to be worth any confusion over its meaning! They come from the same word (probably meaning “pan” and referring to the disc format of coin minting) and both denote a low-value unit of coinage. A pfennig was nothing to sniff at for much of the Middle Ages, but by the middle of the 18th century pfennigs were about as valuable as the much-loathed contemporary American penny.
317. Ariana lets a little bit of information slide here that allows her mother to make a lucky guess in a few pages.
